The Five Elements
This is the whole system, as plainly as we can put it. Not a personality type, not a horoscope, and not a belief. A way of naming which phase a situation is in — and therefore what it will reward, and what it will cost you if you push against it.
The five are not made of anything. They are five ways a thing behaves: how it moves, how it changes, and what it does to what is around it. The classical statement of them is short enough to hold in your head:
Water soaks and descends. Fire blazes and rises. Wood bends and straightens. Metal follows and transforms. Earth sows and reaps.

Every colour, direction, season and cycle you will see attached to them afterwards is elaboration on those five verbs. Start with the verbs and the rest is easy.
The phase of the blade. Everything here is about what you are willing to remove.
Metal is the only one of the five that works by subtraction. It is the season when the year gets quieter and the harvest is decided, when what cannot survive the cold is separated from what can. In a life it shows up as the moment a decision has to be made and no more information is coming.
It rewards clarity and it punishes hoarding. If you are in a Metal moment, the thing that helps is not another option — it is naming the one you already know and cutting the rest loose.
The phase of the first sprout, which has no strength and no alternative but upward.
Wood is spring: everything starting at once, most of it badly. It is the phase of new projects, new people, and the uncomfortable stretch where a thing is alive but not yet proven. It bends rather than breaking, which is why it is also the phase of learning.
It rewards patience and it punishes forcing. If you are in a Wood moment, the useful question is not “is this working?” but “is this still growing?” — those have different answers, and only one of them matters yet.
The phase of stillness, which is not the same thing as doing nothing.
Water is winter: the phase when everything above ground stops and the work moves underneath. It is the coldest and clearest of the five, and the one people try to skip. Nothing is decided here. What happens here is that the sediment settles and you can finally see the bottom.
It rewards waiting and it punishes busyness. If you are in a Water moment, the honest move is to stop generating activity and let the answer come up on its own. It usually does, and it is usually the one you were avoiding.
The phase of being seen — which is the same phase as being exposed.
Fire is summer: the peak, when everything is at its most visible and the least sustainable. It governs warmth, connection, and the specific pleasure of being recognised by someone who matters to you. It is also the phase that burns out fastest.
It rewards visibility and it punishes overexposure. If you are in a Fire moment, the question is how much of yourself you can spend in public without losing the part that needs to stay private. The answer is not always “more”.
The phase between phases. Nothing dramatic happens here, and that is the point.
Earth is not a season but the ground between them — the long afternoon of the year, when the harvest is in and the next thing has not started. It governs digestion in every sense: turning what happened into something you can actually carry.
It rewards steadiness and it punishes drift. If you are in an Earth moment, the work is unspectacular and necessary: consolidate, restock, repair the things you rely on. A period that feels like nothing is happening is often the one holding the rest of the year up.
How they move
The phases are not a list, they are a loop. Two loops, actually, and everything in the system is a description of one of them.
Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water feeds Wood. Each phase hands its work to the next one. When a situation feels like it is progressing, this is the cycle it is running.
Wood breaks Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. Each phase restrains another. When a situation feels stuck, blocked or over-managed, this is the cycle at work — and the fix is usually to add the phase that is missing, not to push harder on the one that is already too strong.
It is not a religion and it asks nothing of your faith. It has no prayers, no membership and no rules about how you live. It is not medicine and not financial advice, and we will not sell it as either. If you want a guarantee about an outcome, we are the wrong place to look.
Two ways to start
The test is free and takes two minutes. If you would rather talk a specific decision through, that is a different conversation — and a longer one.
